LUDGER LAROSE (fr. can.) 1868 – 1915
Ludger Larose was born in Montréal, Quebec Canada on May 1, 1868. Between 1887 and 1894, Larose studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris with Jules-Élie Delaunay, Jean-Paul Laurens and Gustave Moreau. Larose then studied and copied many of the old masters in Rome. He was part of a group of young artists (Franchère, Saint-Charles, Beau, Delfosse, etc.) who had been students of the Institute National des Beaux-Arts, Montreal, founded in 1870, by Abbé Joseph Chabert. The purpose of the school was to train artists to do church commissions. Larose made his mark as a church decorator and came to decorate the Sacred Heart Chapel of Notre Dame, Montreal. His chapel paintings, in the French academic tradition, have clear, precise drawing, with careful light-and-shadow studies. A committed teacher after his return to Montreal in 1894, (Marc-Aurele Fortin 1888-1970 was one of his students), Larose taught at the Conseil des Arts et Manufactures (1898-99), at the École du Plateux (1894-1910), and then in Westmount from 1912 to 1915. Though an academically trained painter, he was sensitive to impressionist color and technique. A painter of still-lifes, genre scenes, portraits, and landscapes, Larose painted extensively in the Laurentians. The artist died in 1915 at the age of 47 in Montréal, Quebec. The painting “Woman & Cherub"” was created in the late 1890's. In this work the artist created a very exceptional piece in the manner of the early 18th century French rococo masters. The image itself measures 48" x 38 1/2" and 61" x 49 1/2" in its ornately carved gesso and gilded frame. The frame, also from the same period, compliments the piece beautifully. Both the painting and frame are in good condition.

CHARLES LEVIER (fr.) 1920 – 2003
Artist Charles Levier was born in 1920 of a French Father and an American Mother in Corsica. He held a fascination with color and form that led him, at age seventeen, to the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs for private studies. World War II broke out and Levier served in the French army in North Africa, later becoming Liaison Officer with the U.S. Office of Strategic Services. Coming to America to live, he divided his time between the United States and France. Leviers' first one-man show took place at the Galerie Constantine in Lyons in 1949, followed by an American debut in Los Angeles in 1950. The year 1955 found him exhibiting at the Galleries de Colisee in Paris and then returning to America where an old friend, Dr. Lilienfeld of Van-Diemen, Lilienfeld Gallery in New York City began to present his paintings. Dr. Lilienfeld was widely respected, and his personal enthusiasm of Levier's work was instrumental in establishing him as a significant artist and proved a most valuable introduction to numerous collectors. For over forty years, Levier enjoyed an important position with countless exhibitions around the world.
His paintings are found in countless private and public collections. Among those who are collectors, examples of his work are owned by Mr. And Mrs. Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, Adlai Stevenson, Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Prince and Princess Poniatoski, Mrs. Dan Topping, Mr. And Mrs. Dean Martin and many others. He is represented in the Museum of Modern Art and the Menton Museum in Paris. In the USA, his work can be found in the permanent collection of The High Museum in Atlanta, GA, The Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, WA, The Evansville Museum of Art & Science, Evansville, IL, Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, AZ, Wright Museum of Art, Beloit, WI, Tucson Flint Institute Of Art, Tucson, AZ, New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans, LA and the San Diego Museum of Fine Arts in San Diego, CA.
E. Benezit, "Dictionaires des Peintras, Sculpteurs, Dessinacteurs, et Graveurs, "volume 6, pg. 630, confirms Levier's solid price structure. In addition, Dr. F.M. Hinkhouse of the Phoenix Art Museum has reviewed the works of Levier and describes him as a master of art, conceiving and executing each of his paintings with the assurance that comes from a combination of basic, instinctive talent, good taste, and formidable creative energy. Levier’s work is dramatic and expressionistic, definitive yet seductive, yet always subtle with carefully considered colors. Charles Levier passed on the 3rd of September, 2003.
The painting “Fleurs SM de Ville” was created in the 1960's. Levier uses a very unique, soft, and serene palette to create a contrast of motion and stillness. Perhaps brilliant simplicity is one of the key qualities that distinguish Levier in his interpretation of people, places and things. The image measures 30" x 40", 38 1/2" x 48" in its beautiful, museum quality frame that compliments the piece perfectly. Both the painting and frame are in perfect condition.
